So here's one to file away under "kids say the darndest things":
On Monday night after work, the usual pandemonium ensued. The girls ran around and played. J and I ran around trying to get dinner going as well as clean up a little (which is essentially a pipe dream because outside of a few hour window after our cleaning lady comes, the house is a constant victim of hurricanes Tessa and Alice).
So once we had things under control, J was in the living room playing with the gals and I went in and said, "Alice, do you want to come set the table?"
Usually, A is all over this, because she loves being a helper. But that night she said, "I would love to, but I can't because I'm busy."
**insert record scratch here** I'm sorry, what?! My first inclination was to laugh. Not because it's ok for a 3 year old to say no to me when I ask her to do something. I think it's more because she didn't have one single ounce of attitude in her response. It was very friendly, pleasant, matter-of-fact and conversational.
I also made the mistake of asking her if she wanted to help instead of telling her it was time for her to help. It makes sense that she was assume she has a choice based on my phrasing.
Of course I nicely told her that she had to come set the table and she ended up setting it without issue. But sometimes my mind is boggled by the things she says, and more specifically the way she says them. It serves as a reminder that we made a little person. This fact still blows my mind, three years later!
Have you guys noticed that Trader Joe's Everything but the Bagel Sesame Seasoning Blend is popping up everywhere? Our friends at Trader Joe's seriously know what's up and as always, they did not disappoint with this (for the record- this isn't sponsored, I'm just a Trader Joe's enthusiast!).
I was thinking about how I'd love to incorporate the Everything Seasoning in a way that I can enjoy it with my hummus. And since pita chips are so darn easy to make, I thought, "why not?"
These are a great throw-together snack option for last minute guests. They come together in a matter of minutes and taste fantastic.
I varied the baking time a little bit so you have the option for an all-around crispier chip or one that's crispy around the edges with a bit of chew left in the middle (that's how I like them!).
While there will keep in a container on your counter for few days, but they really are best eaten right away. I chose a store-bought roasted red pepper hummus but these would be a great vehicle for any of your favorite dips (like this one).
Here are some other great snacks for last minute get-togethers:

Store-bought varieties are heavily processed and often contain many additives and extra ingredients. They are also considered a refined carb, meaning they can cause spikes and crashes in blood sugar and leave you feeling hungry.
1 / 12. Baked Asparagus Dip. Since I'm from Wisconsin, I thought it was only logical to put together a vegetable and a cheese—two of the foods my state produces in abundance. ...
They are essentially Pita Bread cut into wedges or chips, that are oiled, seasoned, and baked until crisp. They are used instead of chips or crackers. They are popular in Mediterranean, Greek and Middle Eastern Cuisine. Store-bought pita chips tend to be quite thick, stiff, and hard to bite into.
Based on the average 2000 calorie/day diet, pita bread will barely make a dent. While whole wheat options tend to be a little higher in calories, they're also higher in fiber, taking longer for your stomach to digest and keeping you full for longer. Fiber is an easy way to cut down your calorie intake naturally.
Popular snacks such crackers, pretzels, tortillas, and pita chips are refined carbs and have no fiber. It's important to consume them in moderation and watch how much you eat. These foods can contribute to issues such as bloating and weight gain. They may also upset the delicate balance of bacteria in your gut.
The chips are thick, crunchy, and salty. Serve with hummus, spinach artichoke dip, whipped feta, whipped cottage cheese, or your favorite dips! They are also great with salads or plain!
Hummus and pita bread is undoubtedly one of the quintessential food pairs. So common, in fact, that mentioning one of these treats will usually make people think of the other! For centuries, Greeks have enjoyed hummus with pita bread, as Lebanese have with fatteh bread, and Egyptians have with saboob bread.
You can use whole grain crackers like Triscuit Thins or Mary's Gone Crackers (btw one of the few whole grain gluten-free crackers on the market), but again, keep an eye on portions to keep calories in check. Or save even more calories by using veggies for dipping.
Naan bread is soft, fluffy, and chewy, whereas pita bread is denser with a slightly crispy texture on the outside. Naan bread also has a buttery flavor due to the ghee and buttermilk in the dough, which adds an extra dimension of flavor compared to pita bread's more neutral taste.
As stated earlier, naan is high in fat, and specifically high in saturated fats. Pita on the other hand is considered to be a low fat food. Naan does have other benefits, including a higher protein content which will keep you fuller for longer and curb cravings.

Choosing whole-grain snacks like pita chips over popcorn prevents the trapping of food pieces that foster bacteria growth. These snacks, when combined with savory snacks like hummus, become a powerhouse for dental health. Whole grains reduce the need for extra sugar, preventing acid formation on the teeth's surface.
