Why It's Important To Choose The Right Activities

Children need fine motor skills whenever they engage in play involvingtheir hands and fingers, such as dressing up dolls, construction toys, and beading.

We also need fine motor skills for many self-care tasks such as doing buttons, tying shoelaces and eating with cutlery.

There are a wealth of toys, games, and activity suggestions out there that claim to build fine motor skills. However, not all of these activities are actually helpful - some activities just leave kids feeling frustrated becausetheir fine motor abilities are too poor to complete the activity successfully.

Does that sound like your child? Kids who experience continual frustration often end up avoiding fine motor tasks altogether!

That's why it is important to choose the right activities that will build your child's skills without making yoru child feel frustrated or anxious!

How OT Mom's Resources May Help You!

These fine motor resources contain a wealth of carefully selected fine motor activities for kids to do at home or at school.

Most of the activities use resources that you probably already have at home, or are otherwise inexpensive and easy to obtain.

All the activities have photographed instructions so you can see exactly what I am suggesting.

But best of all, the activities are designed to give kids a sense of confidence as they develop their fine motor skills. All the activities were tried and tested on my own children as well as many children I have worked with over the years.

I have created the scissor skills resources separately from the main fine motor resource for those who just want to work on scissor skills. However, if your child's fine motor skills are poor, I really recommend that you get both, as scissor cutting is an integral part of building fine motor skills.

None of the OT Mom E-Books serve as a substitute for an occupational therapy evaluation and treatment. Please read my E-Book Disclaimer for further details.

Thisprintable resource aims to help by answering common questions that teachers and parents have about how a child should hold a pencil.

Many people think that the dynamic tripod gripis the only functional way to hold the pencil, but in reality, thereare some variations on the tripod grip that can also be functional – Ishow these in my e-book.

In this download, you will find photographed examples of pencil grasp development with a brief explanation of each stage in development. I also provide photographs of dysfunctional pencil grasps, with some feedback on what could possibly be causing the poor grip.
